9 Tips for looking fabulous without make-up

We all know that make-up hides a multitude of sins. We can look good with a squeeze of foundation, a smattering of powder and a sweep of the bronzer. Pop on some mascara, some cute pink blusher and a bold lipstick, and most of us are ready to face the day. It’s a part of many women’s (and some men’s) daily routine. But don’t you just wish some days you didn’t have to bother? Wouldn’t it be great if you could look fabulous without the morning makeover? Well you’ll be pleased to read that it’s entirely possible. Follow our 9 steps and you’ll be able to ditch the make-up routine and look fabulous every single day without so much as a smidgeon of concealer.

  1. A perfect smile

One of our most attractive facial features is our smile. Our smile communicates how we are feeling and helps us to connect with others. When we aren’t happy with our teeth, we smile less and we tend to feel less confident. Reaching for the make up is one we try to compensate. A perfect boost for confidence is a smile makeover. With beautiful teeth, you’ll be able to flash your smile without a worry, and make-up will suddenly seem less important.

Cosmetic dentistry has grown hugely in the last several years. A healthier, whiter and more radiant smile is no longer the preserve of Hollywood film stars. It’s true, cosmetic dentistry can change your smile dramatically. A new confident, radiant smile is the first step to going make-up free. From simple teeth whitening to aligning crowded teeth, closing gaps, replacing missing teeth or reducing protrusion, a smile makeover can give you the confidence to smile without the need for make-up.

  1. Smooth exfoliated skin

Deep cleansing or exfoliating is a great way to put some radiance back into your skin. Tired, rough skin can be one reason we are tempted into smothering on the foundation.

Facial scrubs can help put the zing back into skin. Don’t use on delicate tissue around the eyes (unless you use a gentle, eye-specific product). Also, ensure you choose a scrub that is appropriate for your skin type. Don’t use a heavy-duty scrub if you have sensitive skin. Using a scrub once or twice a week should keep dead skin cells at bay and put the glow back into your skin. For some handy tips, see Cosmo’s guide to exfoliation here.

  1. Moisturising tips (shh add some illuminating primer for a little cheat)

Using a high quality moisturiser daily is a great way to keep skin softer, more elastic and hydrated. That goes for both men and women. Always choose a good quality moisturiser that is compatible with your skin type, and one that has an SPF 15 factor sunscreen or above. Sunlight damages skin cells. Always apply moisturiser using upward strokes. Add some illuminating primer to your moisturiser to give your skin a natural day glow.

  1. A healthy glow

Getting a golden tan is a great way to ditch the make-up. But, we all know that sunlight is bad for our skin. We may look great with a tan, but the price is in the damage that sunlight does to our skin in later years. Facial tanners are a great alternative and can be used all year round to give your skin a healthy glow. Be sure to choose a brand free from harsh chemicals and fragrance, as facial skin is quite sensitive.

  1. Drink more water

Drinking water helps to remove toxic materials from your body. Effective removal of impurities has a positive effect on the skin. You should try to drink at least 8 glasses or 1.5 litres of water a day.

  1. Skin boosting vitamins and minerals

Good skin scare starts with nutrition. What you eat affects your whole body, and that includes your face. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies will have an impact on your skin. Eating a healthy diet and taking some skin boosting vitamins and minerals will help keep your skin looking healthy all year round. The top 9 vitamins you need for healthy skin are Vitamin A, B3, B5, C, D, E and K, plus choline and folic acid. Always consult a qualified nutritionist or healthcare provider to establish your vitamin requirements.

  1. Eyebrow grooming

There’s no need to slather eyebrows with pencil. A simple pluck and brush will keep your eyebrows neat and beautifully preened. Always pluck from underneath the eyebrow, never from the top.

  1. Lengthen and curl those lashes

Many mascaras contain harsh chemicals that actually damage your eyelashes over time. Petroleum jelly, coconut oil or olive oil can give your eyelashes lustre and can also stimulate lash growth. If you are a diehard mascara wearer, eyelash tinting might be an alternative measure. Use an eyelash curler to create a nice gradual curl. This will make your eyes look bigger and brighter.

  1. Moisturise and plump those lips

Lips are like a sponge. They dry out quickly, especially in the winter months. Keep lips moisturised and plump by using a good lip balm. Choose one with hydrating ingredients, such as beeswax, shea butter, vitamin E, almond, jojoba, or coconut oil.
