Hush Little Baby

A little while ago I wrote about the three step routine from Johnson’s to encourage a peaceful nights sleep. Well two weeks later how has Arlo’s sleep changed since we started doing the bath, massage and story routine? For the first week I made a note of how long it took to for him to fall asleep and how many night wake ups he had. On average in the first week without following the three steps it took about an hour to get him to fall asleep. A couple of times it was less than that and once an hour and forty five minutes of him lurching around the bed, chucking a few stuffed toys about and playing peekaboo with a muslin. Sometimes I really wish he had his own cot in his own room so he could just entertain himself and then pass out with tiredness (not crying, I’d never let him do that!) But as we only have the choice of our bedroom or his sisters he’s in with us in a co-sleeper cot until we move and have space to have it with the side on. So currently I have to stay with him till he’s asleep so he doesn’t crawl off the bed!

I really enjoyed the bath aspect of the routine, either climbing in with him myself or attempting to stop his sister from pouring water all over him and the rest of the bathroom! I must say they both smelt absolutely delicious and as we a snuggled up I kept getting hints of lavender which is known for its calming properties. I will say however that it is really hard to get Arlo to stay still for a massage now he’s on the move! Most nights I had to have him wrapped in a fluffy towel on my lap and do a limb at a time or I ended up with him slip sliding away from me and crawling off across the floor!

Nightly waking averaged 3 or 4 that I remember in the first week, although as we share a bed I think sometimes I feed in my sleep!

In the second week, where we did a set routine of bath, massage and quiet story time rather than manic hurtling around (or feeding on the sofa in front of the TV) I found that on average it took 45 minutes for Arlo to fall asleep, with three evenings taking just half an hour before I could sneak out of the room. During this second week Arlo also went slightly longer before his first wake up, up to two hours rather than the normal one and a half, which was definitely a happy surprise! He still woke up an average of 3 times during the night.

such a cute baby.Thank you for this! The last part of your post was very encouraging to me as I am currently experiencing the difficult (and often overwhelming) adjustment to two kids. My heart knows that just loving these little ones is enough, but my head always tries to tell me I need to be doing more or doing “better.”
