Marley Spoon – cooking made easy

Last week we enjoyed two lovely meals that we cooked following step by step instructions from Marley Spoon, using ingredients that they had sent directly to us! When the email first arrived in my inbox offering us a trial I was a bit sceptical, what’s wrong with choosing my own meals and buying my own food? After taking a look at the website I decided it was definitely worth trying out though, as the choice of meals were all so impressive sounding and not the normal things that I would choose to bung into our weekly meal plan either!

The concept is that you choose a meal from the selection available then choose how many people you want to cook for and on what day. The food is then delivered along with full photo-instructions for you to cook and enjoy at home.

The two meals I chose to try out were Tuscan baked chicken with wild rice & Pad Thai soba noodles with romanesco and crunchy peanut sauce, both of which looked delicious and surprisingly similar to the photos on the recipes cards!

The box that arrived contained a special cool packed part to ensure that the cold food (in our case just chicken and spring onions) remained cold, and although our delivery actually turned up the day after I had specified they were both still cold and I didn’t have any qualms in using them. The ingredients for the meals were in separate brown bags clearly labelled, and inside each bag was the right amount of everything needed for each recipe, so no faffing with weighing things or having half a packet left of an ingredient you don’t often use.

The recipe cards were really simple to follow, with six photographs to make sure you’re on the right track, though I would recommend reading through completely before you start just so you’ve got a good idea of what you’re doing before you do it! There is also a list of ingredients you will need to provide (but these are staples like oil and salt) and equipment that you’ll need. You do get to see this information when you choose the meal you want too, so no nasty surprises or the need to send your partner to the 24 hr supermarket for a cheese grater!

All the ingredients we were sent were fresh, were good quality and picked from sustainable suppliers and organic where possible. The two meals turned out really well, but our favourite was the Tuscan Chicken which will probably become popular in my meal plans going forward! I also found that the amount of sauce the recipe made meant that we had a good sized portion left over that we had with pasta for lunch the next day! The Noodle dish was tasty too, though a little hot for both our tastebuds, but I wanted to take the opportunity to try something new out, and I think Marley Spoon is a brilliant way to stretch your culinary tastes!  As I said earlier our delivery arrived the day after I had specified, although this is more of an issue with the delivery company rather than Marley Spoon, who called me the next day to discuss the options and did offer a new order in case the food wasn’t still in good condition/cold enough. I thought was really good of them even though luckily I didn’t have to take them up on it. It was annoying to have waited in all day for no delivery to arrive, and thankfully we weren’t reliant on the delivery for dinner that night and it wouldn’t put me off using the service again as I do believe it was a one off. If you’re in London then you get to choose a two hour delivery window too, which is helpful!

Although it isn’t something we would use frequently at the moment due to a lowered income as I’m on meagre maternity pay but I wish things like this existed when I was in my mid 20’s and had a lot more disposable income and lived in the middle of a city with no major supermarkets! Next time we have friends over for dinner then I will definitely take a look at the recipes to see what takes my fancy as it really does take the hassle out of choosing a recipe, trekking round the supermarket to find all the ingredients and then having half packets of left over ingredients that would never get used. The minimum meal size is for two adults but both the recipes I chose were generously sized so there’s no worry about still being hungry after you’ve eaten either, although there is a minimum order of 4 portions (which can be two different meals) and all shipping costs are included.

I was given a discount code for use on the site to enable me to write this review, all words/opinions are my own.

This looks like such a great idea – I wish every meal could be delivered to my door like this, no thinking, no shopping just the cooking! AMAZING! x
